Librazhd, April 25, 2026
Prof. (Assoc.) Dr. Petrit Dobi
A key preparatory meeting of the organizing group was held in Librazhd to initiate the organization of an important event dedicated to livestock farmers and pastoralism, with the ambition of developing it into a regional platform for cooperation across the Western Balkans.
The meeting was facilitated by the two regional coordinators, Petrit Dobi and Luigji Turmalaj, together with the Elbasan partner, Kristaq Skënderi, marking an important moment of coordination between local and regional levels. Participants also included representatives of institutions, field experts, and civil society organizations active in the Librazhd area.
This meeting represents the first concrete step in the process of organizing the Regional Gathering of Pastoralists in the Western Balkans—an initiative aimed at strengthening dialogue, exchange of experiences, and cooperation among stakeholders in the sector at a regional level.
Discussions focused on key aspects of the event’s organization, including the mobilization of livestock farmers, engagement of local actors, and the development of an agenda that reflects the realities and needs of pastoral communities. Particular emphasis was placed on the direct involvement of shepherds through structured field interviews, which will help identify concrete challenges and inform the preparation of a joint declaration.
Participants highlighted that this event is not intended to be a one-off activity, but rather a strategic platform for building a cooperation network among farmers, experts, and institutions, supporting the sustainable development of pastoralism in the region.
The event is scheduled to take place on May 30, 2026, in the outskirts of Librazhd, and is expected to bring together a broad range of livestock farmers and stakeholders. Preparations are already underway, including promotional activities and coordination with local partners to ensure a successful organization.
This process is expected to serve as a model for similar meetings in other areas of the region, establishing a structured and replicable approach to strengthening pastoral communities and enhancing cross-border cooperation in the Western Balkans.
