In a significant step toward recognizing the role of pastoral communities in sustaining rural economies and biodiversity, and in what many described as a long-overdue conversation, the Municipality of Librazhd hosted the IYRP–Western Balkans Regional Gathering of Pastoralists [Elbasan Zonal Gathering-1 at Librazhd] on 30 May 2026. Held at Cherry Park, the gathering brought together 44 participants, including shepherds, local authorities, civil society actors, and technical experts.

A key preparatory meeting of the organizing group was held in Librazhd to initiate the organization of an important event dedicated to livestock farmers and pastoralism, with the ambition of developing it into a regional platform for cooperation across the Western Balkans.

The Fourth Albanian Rural Parliament, held in the municipalities of Lezhë and Mirditë, emerged as a landmark national and regional event under the theme “Europe in Rural Albania.” This year’s gathering not only addressed Albania’s rural development priorities but also positioned the country within a broader Western Balkans movement aimed at revitalizing pastoralism and strengthening cross-border cooperation.
