Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on
Rangelands, Transhumance and Pastoralism

As part of Pre-Gathering preparatory activities, we organized Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on Rangelands, Transhumance and Pastoralism (1 day) with the partnership and leadership of local organizations organization in Western Balkan countries/ zones.

This 1-day Workshop considered an agenda for discussions:

  • Importance and Challenges of Pastoralism and Shepherds Globally
  • Transhumance, Pastoralism and Landscapes in Balkan country/zone
  • Plan of Regional Gathering (April 2026), and Constitution of National/Zonal Organizing Committee
  • How to prepare for Regional Gathering: inviting collaborations; arranging logistics; mobilizing stakeholders; mobilizing shepherd participants; promotion through media and social media; volunteering etc.

The participants invited in the Workshop were: municipalities, agriculture department, regional authority, local NGOs, citizen groups, shepherd associations/groups, chamber of agriculture commerce, business groups dealing in animal products, academic/research institutions, local colleges, local school administration, and others.

Organized at the Faculty for Food Technology, Food Safety and Ecology of UDG University in Podgorica attracted nearly 25 participants. There were 4 officers from 2 municipalities, and remaining were the students of the university. The introduction was given by Dr. Amil Orahovac, Assistant Professor at the Faculty. He was followed by Ismeta Gjoka, Secretary General of TGI WB. Dr. Arjjumend presented the important and key issue of the shepherd people in general and in Montenegro particular. Responding to the questions of the students, Dr. Arjjumend invited students and young professionals to join TGI Internships not only to learn about pastoralism and associated issues but also to contribute to the Regional Gathering of Pastoralists. Municipality officers were keen to know the solutions and ways out to help and empower the pastoralists. The workshop was concluded by Martine Wolff giving her inputs and highlighting the municipality examples from France and Italy where exemplary model works are done.
